Group Chats in ChatGPT
OpenAI has introduced a pilot feature allowing users to create group chats within ChatGPT. This new functionality enables people to collaborate directly with others and ChatGPT in real time—whether planning an event, working on a project, or brainstorming ideas. The feature is currently available for Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plan users in selected regions: Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan.
To start a group chat, users can click the people icon in any new or existing chat. Adding others to an existing chat generates a copy, ensuring the original stays private. Each group chat supports 1–20 participants and can be shared via link. Users create a basic profile (name, photo, and username) when joining or hosting a group. These chats are organized in a separate section in the ChatGPT sidebar.
Group chats run on the “GPT-4.5 Auto” model and support all major features like image generation, file uploads, and voice dictation. Only ChatGPT’s replies count toward model usage limits; user-to-user messages do not. ChatGPT also features updated social behavior in these chats—it may remain silent, use emojis, reference profile photos, and can be directly mentioned to respond.
Importantly, group chats are isolated from personal conversations: ChatGPT does not access or form memories based on group interactions. Users under 18 benefit from automatic moderation that limits exposure to sensitive content, and guardians can disable group access via parental controls.
OpenAI views this as the beginning of a broader rollout and will adjust the feature based on user feedback and behavior.
